The Tragedy of the Economy and the Workforce

Op/Ed

Like many New Yorkers, and Americans in general, times are difficult for me, financially. I joined the ranks of the unemployed last year and have since developed an immediate lifestyle change. The overnight kind. The kind that there’s no turning back from. It was not my intentions to join the throng of the unemployed: if it was up to me I’d have no part in this newfound brotherhood that I am a part of. Membership has its privileges, sure, but I’ll pass, thanks.

Many of the individuals that I know, who are in the same position, have attempted to learn new skills, recreate themselves, come to peace with their situation, or otherwise maintain some level of sanity during this tumultuous and confusing time. Still, we must look for work. Unfortunately, the work is hiding. I think. The only thing that I find (and it really isn’t hard to find it, as it is blatantly obvious and ubiquitous) is repackaged specialist and/or senior level jobs masquerading as internships or entry level jobs.

Here is one such job that made me literally LOL.
Adobe InDesign production work $10/hour (Park Slope, Brooklyn)
$10 / hr.
Must be an expert at Adobe InDesign.
Must show experience laying out books and/or magazines.
Please send resume and links to portfolio.
Thanks.
Compensation: $10 per hour
Somehow, the combination of “expert” and “$10/hr.” are as in harmony as Villa d’Este and a Roach Motel (or even the Hotel California, for that matter). An expert in anything is not likely to relate to “$10/hr.”. Was this job post serious?

InDesign CS4, alone, costs US $700.00 (who will buy InDesign alone? You’ll need, at least, the US $1,800.00 Design Premium.). A base model Mac Pro to run it on will set you back a bare minimum of US $2,500.00. Throw in a monitor, some back up devices, font libraries, image libraries, a speedy Internet connection, and a few other niceties, and the price to be able to even use InDesign is so far removed from “$10/hr.” that the conversation starts and stops immediately.

What’s the economy and marketplace coming to these days? That can’t really be a legitimate job posting. That sounds like foolishness. Daddies, many of us need to find jobs in order to support our families. Trust me: I know. The best job that maintains our dignity and allows us to live a satisfactory lifestyle is coming soon. Stay faithful.

Take care, and influence someone for good today :D

Scott great article and so many valid points. I personally have found work but am so turned off by industry as a whole lately. But who am I kidding...I need a paycheck. But for the 10 months this year that I was unemployed I found many of those "expert/professional" positions that paid $10 an hr. I have taken a substantial pay cut to even get a job. But I utilize all of this to fuel the fire of my own small business. We really have to utilize this time to tap into our own dreams & talents and hopefully capatize on that. I will repost!
